WHY GET FIT?


1. Regular physical activity greatly reduces the chance of death from heart disease which is the #1 cause of death for women and men In the U.S.

2. Exercise lowers the risk of getting diabetes, hypertension, and colon cancer. Cancer is the #2 cause of death for men and women in the U.S.

3. Physical activity delays the development of high blood pressure. Strokes are the #3 cause of death for females and males in the U.S.

4. Physical exercise improves mental health and strengthens muscles, bones, and joints.

5. Women and men of all ages benefit from regular exercise. People must exercise 3-5 times/week

6. Exercise reduces anxiety, stress, and anger. Cardiovascular activity causes the body to release endorphins which give a person a relaxed, "well being" feeling.

7 Exercise helps a person to look younger than they are.

8. Aerobic exercise helps a person to burn calories (fat) and lose weight. 1 in 5 teenagers is overweight. 1 in 25 teenagers have an eating disorder.

9 Heart disease can start in early childhood. Cardiovascular exercise can reduce cholesterol levels and strengthen cardiac muscle. A person must get heart rate to or above 140 beats/min

11. In 1996, 33% of Americans were overweight compared with 24% in 1986. Projected to be 40% in the year 2005

12. The percent of American adults who have been diagnosed with diabetes rose from 16.6% in 1998 to 6.9% in 1999. Diabetes kills 180,000 Americans each year. Inactivity can lead to obesity, which is tied to diabetes.

13. By the year 2000, America was supposed to be on the run or at least a brisk walk. Americans are not going to meet the physical activity objectives of the federal goverment 's healthy people plan. 35 to 40% of Americans get no exercise.

14. Over the past three decades, the percent of overweight children has doubled. Overeating is not the only factor because children are not as active as their parents 30 years ago.

15. Doctors have increasing evidence that heart disease takes root in childhood. More children are obese and fewer exercise.

16 People feel less anxious after exercise, because they get a time out from their usual cares and worries.

17. Regular aerobic exercise keeps the entire human machine in tune.

18. Get moving. Get regular exercise to balance calories from the foods you eat.
